Family skiing in Grimentz-Zinal

Another unforgettable year of family skiing with the Lang Gang in Grimentz–Zinal, Val d’Anniviers!

For as long as I can remember, the Lang Gang and the mountains have been inseparable. Year after year we head back to the same slopes, sharing the rhythms of the season: the first tentative turns for the littlest ones, the proud grin when someone masters a new technique, the quiet moments over hot chocolate at the end of the day. This season was no different — and yet it felt fresh, lively, and full of new memories.

A tradition that keeps growing We’ve been skiing together for many seasons now, and watching the kids grow into confident skiers is one of the great joys of these trips. Every year brings a new set of milestones: a child who used to cling to a parent now bombing down blues with friends, a teenager who used to avoid bumps now seeking out steeper lines, and adults rediscovering playful confidence on varied terrain. The continuity of returning to Grimentz–Zinal makes those changes so much more meaningful — you can literally trace the progress of each family member slope by slope.

Why Grimentz–Zinal? Grimentz–Zinal in Val d’Anniviers has become our go-to destination for many practical reasons:

  • Reliable spring conditions: The area’s high-altitude slopes and favorable exposure mean great April skiing — soft snow in the afternoons, well-preserved early-morning pistes, and extended season length compared with lower resorts.
  • Varied terrain: From gentle nursery slopes for beginners to wide cruisers and steeper runs for more experienced skiers, the ski area caters to all ability levels. It’s perfect for mixed-ability groups like ours.
  • Family-friendly atmosphere: The village and lifts are welcoming; the pace is relaxed compared with busier resorts, which helps families unwind and enjoy time together.
  • Off-slope charm: Traditional Valais architecture, cozy mountain restaurants, and easy access to surrounding villages make it an attractive base for a full week’s holiday.
  • This year’s week: a familiar base, a fresh twist After spending two long half-term weeks in Val d’Anniviers the previous years, we managed to book another fantastic end-of-season ski week in Grimentz–Zinal. Staying in Grimentz gives us the perfect balance: quick access to the lifts, peaceful evenings back at the chalet, and easy logistics for everyone.

Skiing highlights

  • Family freeride exploration: One of the best parts of the week was exploring freeride terrain together. The children took turns leading short, manageable routes, while the adults scoped safe lines and shared tips on reading snow and terrain. There were big smiles and a few adrenaline-fueled moments — all within careful, fun-minded supervision.
  • Technique progress: Our in-house “ski school” atmosphere meant we spent time focusing on technique — carving, short-radius turns, controlling speed on mixed snow, and adapting to spring conditions. Small guided drills during warm-ups and steady encouragement produced noticeable improvement across the group.
  • Shared laughs and stories: Long lunches, lift conversations, and the inevitable wipeouts became stories we’ll retell for seasons. Those moments knit the family closer and turn a week of skiing into a week of shared history.

Grimentz-Zinal is one of the resorts that can deliver solid on- and off-piste skiing well into the season. Its long runs and north-facing aspects help preserve snow quality even in seasons with less predictable snowfall.
