Your first ski lessons in Grimentz-Zinal: guide to what you need to know

Hello and welcome!

I’m one of the lucky instructors here at Bespoke Snowsports, and for years, I’ve had the privilege of sharing my passion for the mountains with people just like you, right here in the breathtaking, snow-covered paradise of Grimentz-Zinal.

I know this place like the back of my hand—every gentle slope, every cozy mountain restaurant, every stunning viewpoint. And let me tell you, you’ve chosen an absolutely magical place to begin your skiing adventure.

Taking your first ski lessons is an incredible step. I can almost feel your excitement—and maybe a few butterflies, too! That’s completely normal. Every single person you see gliding effortlessly down the mountain was once exactly where you are now: a total beginner, wondering what to expect.

Our entire purpose at Bespoke Snowsports is to take those butterflies and turn them into pure joy. We’re here to guide you, support you, and show you just how amazing it feels to slide on snow.

We teach everyone, from the littlest skiers finding their snow legs to families wanting to create lasting memories, to adults ready to conquer a new challenge.

This article is your complete guide. We’re going to pour all our experience into it to answer every question you might have. We’ll cover what to wear, where to get your gear (I have a fantastic local tip for you!), where we’ll meet, and exactly what those first few amazing hours on the snow will feel like.

So, grab a cup of hot chocolate, get comfortable, and let’s talk about your first ski lessons in Grimentz-Zinal.

More than just a pretty face: Why Grimentz-Zinal is a beginner’s paradise

You might have seen the photos—the ancient, sun-blackened chalets of Grimentz village, the dramatic “Imperial Crown” of 4000-metre peaks surrounding Zinal. It’s easily one of the most beautiful valleys in the world. But is it good for beginners?

My answer is an enthusiastic yes! Here’s why this valley is the perfect classroom for your first ski lessons.

The perfect learning environment

Unlike some of the sprawling, chaotic “mega-resorts,” Grimentz-Zinal offers a perfect blend of high-altitude, snow-sure slopes and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. The pistes are quieter, which means you have more space to practice and build your confidence without feeling overwhelmed.

Dedicated beginner zones

This is crucial. You don’t want your first lesson to be on a busy main run. Both Grimentz and Zinal have fantastic, dedicated beginner areas, set away from the faster traffic.

  • In Grimentz: We use the fantastic “jardin de neige” (snow garden) at Bendolla (at the top of the main gondola). It’s a wide, gentle, and sunny plateau equipped with “magic carpets” (think of them as conveyor belts for skiers) and gentle button lifts. It’s a safe, contained space designed purely for learning.
  • In Zinal: The beginner area at Sorebois (also at the top of the gondola) is similarly spacious and well-equipped, offering stunning views down the valley as you learn.

The “Bespoke” difference: learning your way

Now, I may be biased, but I truly believe how you learn is as important as where you learn. At Bespoke Snowsports, our entire philosophy is built around you. We don’t do massive, impersonal group lessons where you’re just one of twenty.

We specialize in private and small-group lessons. This means:

  • Your pace: We go as fast or as slow as you need.
  • Your goals: Want to be able to follow your kids on a blue run by the end of the week? We’ll build a plan for that. Just want to learn to stop safely and enjoy the views? That’s our focus.
  • Your confidence: Our number one job is to make you feel safe, successful, and happy. We’re experts at breaking down the “scary” parts into simple, achievable steps.

Choosing Grimentz-Zinal means you’re learning in a world-class, beautiful setting. Choosing Bespoke Snowsports means you’re getting instruction that’s 100% tailored to you, ensuring your first ski lessons are a memory you’ll cherish, not one you just “survived.”

Gearing up for success: your complete equipment guide (and a local secret!)

Okay, let’s talk about the “stuff.” Ski gear can seem complicated, but it’s not. Let’s break down exactly what you need for your first lesson. Getting this right is the first step to a great day.

The “big three”: boots, skis, and poles

1. Ski boots: your most important piece of gear:

If I can give you one piece of advice, it’s this: your ski boots are everything. They are the steering wheel for your skis. I see so many beginners struggling, not because they can’t ski, but because their boots don’t fit.

  • How should they feel? Snug. Tighter than your normal shoes. Your toes should just brush the end when you’re standing up straight, and pull back slightly when you bend your knees (your “ski stance”).
  • What to wear: ONE pair of thin or medium-weight ski socks. Not thick, chunky hiking socks! And never two pairs. Wrinkles and bunching are the enemy and will cause pain. Your ski pants go over the boot, never tucked in.

2. Skis: your new best friends

For your first lessons, you’ll be on “beginner” skis. This is a good thing! They are designed to be shorter, softer, and more flexible, which makes them much easier to turn at slower speeds. The rental shop will pick the right length for you based on your height and ability.

3. Poles: the accessories

Here’s a little secret: you probably won’t even use your poles for the first hour or two. Your first lessons are all about finding balance and control with your feet and skis. We’ll introduce poles later to help with timing and balance, but don’t worry about them at first.

Our top local recommendation: why we trust Valsport

This is a key part of our “insider knowledge.” When our clients ask where to rent their equipment, we send them to one place: Valsport.

You’ll find their shop right in the heart of Grimentz. Why do we recommend them so enthusiastically?

  • Expert boot fitters: The team at Valsport understands boots. They will take the time to measure your feet and listen to you, ensuring you walk out with a boot that is snug but comfortable. This is priceless.
  • Quality beginner packages: They have excellent, well-maintained equipment specifically for beginners. You won’t be given old, heavy, outdated gear.
  • Friendly, local service: They speak great English, they’re patient, and they know their stuff. They’ll get you sorted out efficiently and with a smile.

My pro-tip: Do not wait until 9 AM on the morning of your first lesson to get your gear. The shops are always chaotic then. Go the afternoon before you arrive (e.g., Saturday afternoon for a Sunday lesson). It’s calm, you can take your time, and you’ll wake up on your first day relaxed and ready to go.

Just tell them the Bespoke Snowsports team sent you!

What to wear: staying warm and dry (without overheating)

Being cold or wet is the fastest way to ruin a ski day. But being too hot and sweaty is just as bad. The golden rule is layering. You can always take a layer off, but you can’t put on a layer you didn’t bring.

Here is your perfect layering system, from inside-out:

1. Base layer (the “next-to-skin”)

  • What: Long-sleeved top and long johns (leggings).
  • Material: Merino wool or a synthetic (polyester).
  • The Big NO: NO COTTON. Cotton absorbs sweat and holds it against your skin, making you dangerously cold once you stop moving. This is the biggest mistake first-timers make.

2. Mid-layer (the “insulation”)

  • What: A fleece jacket, a light down vest, or a thin insulated jacket.
  • Purpose: This layer traps your body heat. On a warm spring day, you might skip this or wear a very light one. On a cold January day, a good fleece is essential.

3. Outer layer (the “shell”)

  • What: A waterproof and windproof ski jacket and ski pants (salopettes).
  • Purpose: This protects you from the elements—wind, snow, and the occasional tumble onto the wet snow.

The essential accessories (don’t forget these!)

  • Helmet: This is non-negotiable. We require all our clients, children and adults, to wear a helmet. It keeps you safe and warm. You can rent these at Valsport with your skis.
  • Goggles: Not sunglasses (for your first day, at least). Goggles protect your eyes from wind, snow, and sun glare from all angles. An “all-weather” lens (often orange, pink, or yellow) is perfect.
  • Gloves or mittens: Waterproof ski gloves are a must. Mittens (with all fingers together except the thumb) are generally warmer than gloves.
  • Ski socks: As mentioned before, one good pair.
  • Sunscreen & lip balm: The sun at high altitude is strong, even on cloudy days. The reflection off the snow is intense. Apply SPF 30+ to all exposed skin.

You don’t need to buy the most expensive “pro” gear. You just need to be warm, dry, and safe. With your gear from Valsport and your layers sorted, you’re 100% ready for the mountain.

The big day: from nerves to “I’m skiing!”

What to expect first ski lesson

This is it! The morning of your first lesson. You’ve got your gear, you’ve layered up, and you’re heading to the lift. Let’s walk through exactly what’s going to happen.

The morning of: breakfast, prep, and that “first day of school” feeling

First, eat a good breakfast. Skiing is a sport, and you’ll be using muscles you didn’t know you had. You need fuel!

Double-check your pockets:

  • Lift pass? (Make sure it’s in a pocket on its own, preferably on your left arm).
  • Goggles?
  • Gloves?
  • Sunscreen on?
  • Phone (for photos!)?

Give yourself plenty of time. Everything takes a bit longer when you’re clomping around in ski boots (you’ll get used to it, I promise!). The walk from the village to the gondola is a warm-up in itself.

And those nerves? Embrace them. It’s the feeling of starting a brand new, incredible adventure. The moment you meet your instructor, that anxiety will melt away.

The meeting point: where your Bespoke adventure begins

Finding your Bespoke Snowsports instructor is easy. We’re the ones in the smart, professional uniforms, but more importantly, we’re the ones with the biggest smiles, waiting to greet you.

We’ll have arranged a clear and simple meeting point with you when you book. It will be one of two main places:

  • If you’re in Grimentz: Our primary meeting point is at the top of the Télécabine Grimentz-Bendolla. You’ll ride the gondola up the mountain (a beautiful 10-minute ride), and we’ll be waiting for you right as you exit, just before you step onto the snow. We meet here because this is where the perfect, sunny beginner area is located.
  • If you’re in Zinal: We’ll meet you at the top of the Télécabine Zinal-Sorebois. Again, you ride the lift up into the high-alpine, and we’ll be waiting for you in the main arrival area.

The first 15 Minutes: This is just a friendly chat. We’ll introduce ourselves, ask how you’re feeling, and check your equipment. We’ll make sure your boots are buckled correctly (snug!) and that your helmet is secure.

We’ll talk about your goals and any worries you might have. This is all about making you feel comfortable and confident before we even click into a ski.

The first few hours in the snow: from boots to sliding (the “Bespoke” method)

This is where the magic begins. Your first lesson is not about flying down a mountain. It’s about building a foundation of balance and control. It’s about learning the “language” of your skis.

Here’s a typical progression for your first two hours with us:

Step 1: just your boots (the “moonwalk”) Before we even touch the skis, we’ll just walk around on the flat snow in our boots. We’ll practice balancing and stomping. It feels awkward at first, but it’s key to getting a feel for the equipment.

Step 2: one ski on (the “scooter”) next, we’ll click just one ski on. We’ll leave the other boot free to “scoot” us around, like on a scooter. This is a brilliant exercise for learning to balance on a slippery, sliding object while still having the security of one foot on the ground. We’ll practice gliding, maybe even lifting our free foot for a second or two. You’re already skiing!

Step 3: both skis on (the “shuffle” and the “magic carpet”) Okay, time for the full setup. We’ll click both skis on. The first challenge? Just standing still! We’ll teach you how to stand “across” the hill so you don’t slide away. We’ll practice shuffling your feet, side-stepping up a tiny slope, and turning around on the spot.

Then, we’ll introduce you to your new best friend: the “Magic Carpet” (travelator). This is a conveyor belt that carries you up a very, very gentle slope. No scary lifts, just step on and step off. It’s the perfect way to get a little height so you can practice your first real slides.

Step 4: the “snowplough” (your brakes and steering wheel) This is the most important skill you’ll learn on day one. It’s also called the “pizza” or “wedge.” We’ll teach you how to bring the tips of your skis together and push your heels apart, forming a V-shape.

  • First, we use it to stop. We’ll have you glide straight down our tiny slope and then make your “pizza” to come to a gentle, controlled stop. We’ll practice this until you feel 100% confident that you can stop yourself. This is a huge milestone!
  • Second, we use it to turn. By putting a little more pressure on one ski (e.g., your left ski), your “pizza” will magically steer you to the right. Then, you’ll shift pressure to your right ski, and you’ll turn back to the left.

And just like that… you are skiing. You are in control. You are turning. You are stopping. The feeling of that first successful, controlled snowplough turn is something you will never forget.

Throughout this process, our teaching style is 100% positive. We’ll give you clear, simple instructions. We’ll use fun analogies. If you fall (which everyone does!), we’ll be right there to show you the easiest way to get back up, have a quick laugh about it, and try again.

Your first lesson is about small victories that add up to a huge feeling of accomplishment.

Not a one-size-fits-all school: how we teach at Bespoke

Your first ski lessons in Grimentz-Zinal should be tailored to you. A five-year-old, a nervous first-time adult, and a family of mixed abilities all learn differently. This is where our “Bespoke” name truly comes to life.

For the little ones (children’s lessons: fun is priority #1)

When we teach children, our main job is to make them fall in love with the snow. We don’t “drill” technique; we play.

  • It’s all games: We’re not “practicing our snowplough”; we’re “making a pizza for the yeti.” We’re not “balancing on one ski”; we’re “pretending to be storks.”
  • The snow garden: The “jardin de neige” at Bendolla is our playground. It’s full of colourful characters, mini-slaloms, and fun obstacles.
  • Safety and trust: With our private lessons, your child has our undivided attention. We build a bond of trust, so they feel safe to try new things. Our first priority is to make sure that when they finish their lesson, they are happy, proud, and asking, “Can we go skiing again tomorrow?”

For adults and young people (it’s never too LATE!)

Teaching adults is one of our favourite things to do. You learn differently from children—you’re more analytical, and let’s be honest, you’re more aware of the “what if I fall?” factor.

  • We address the fear: We understand this! We’re not going to push you onto a slope you’re not ready for. We build your confidence from the ground up.
  • We explain the “why”: We won’t just tell you what to do; we’ll explain why it works. “When you press your shin against the front of the boot, this is what it does to the ski…” This technical understanding often helps adult learners “click” with the movements.
  • The goal is freedom: Our goal is to give you the skills and confidence to explore. To be able to ski a beautiful blue run, stop to take a photo of the Matterhorn in the distance, and ski down to a restaurant for lunch. That’s the freedom we’re working towards.

For the whole family (learning together)

This is a truly special experience. Learning to ski with your children creates a bond like no other.

  • Managing different levels: This is our specialty. We can run a lesson where we give the kids fun, game-based challenges on one side of the piste while giving the parents more technical feedback on the other.
  • Creating shared memories: We’ll act as your guide, not just your instructor. We can structure the lesson to ski a new run together, find the best hot chocolate on the mountain, and help you all progress as a team. It’s a unique way to spend your holiday, and the shared achievements are priceless.

You’ve mastered the pizza… what’s next?

Your first lesson (or two) will be about mastering the snowplough in the beginner area. But our beautiful, wide-open valley is waiting for you! The progression from “beginner” to “skier” is so exciting.

Your first “real” lift Once you’re confidently stopping and turning on the magic carpet, it’s time for your first “real” lift. In Grimentz, this is usually the ‘Les Crêts’ button lift. Button lifts (or “drag lifts”) can seem tricky, but we will walk you through it step-by-step.

  1. We’ll show you how to hold your poles in one hand.
  2. We’ll tell you how to line yourself up.
  3. We’ll show you how to grab the “button” and (most importantly) let it pull you—don’t try to sit down!
  4. We’ll be right there with you, and we’ll practice until it’s second nature. The feeling of successfully riding your first lift is a massive confidence boost!

Your first green and blue runs—this is the payoff. After the button lift, you’ll be on your first “real” piste.

  • In Grimentz, this is a beautiful, wide, and gentle blue run (it’s really a green run!) that winds its way back down to the Bendolla beginner area.
  • In Zinal, you’ll explore the gentle blue pistes around the ‘Combe’ area.

The slope is still very gentle, but it’s longer. You’ll link your snowplough turns, control your speed, and for the first time, you’ll feel that amazing rhythm of “turn, turn, turn.” You’ll stop, look back up the hill at your tracks, and feel an incredible sense of achievement. This is what it’s all about.

Your first “pause-café” An essential part of any ski lesson! Skiing is about enjoying the whole mountain experience. Once you’re sliding confidently, we’ll ski to one of our favourite spots for a well-deserved break.

  • At Bendolla (Grimentz): The Restaurant de Bendolla has a huge, sunny terrace. Grabbing your first chocolat chaud or vin chaud and looking out at the Imperial Crown peaks, knowing you skied there, is a core memory in the making.
  • At Sorebois (Zinal): The Restaurant de Sorebois has one of the best views in the valley.

Setting goals for the week From here, your journey accelerates. Your Bespoke instructor will set goals for the week. We’ll work on making your snowplough turns smoother, then start to bring your skis closer together between turns, which is the first step towards the legendary “parallel turn.”

By the end of your week of lessons, our goal is to have you confidently and safely skiing all the blue runs in the resort, riding the chairlifts, and feeling like a true skier.
