Intro to Ski Racing
Race technique for every skier
Racers are the most efficient skiers on the mountain. They stand in a strong position, set the edge early and choose a line that keeps their speed under control. You do not need to race to benefit from that: the same skills make every run smoother, faster and less tiring.
In this Intro to Ski Racing your instructor spends the whole session on race technique. We use drills that racers use in training, on groomed runs that suit each exercise, and film key moments when it helps you see the difference. The focus is technique, not a stopwatch.

What you will work on
- Race stance. A low, athletic position with the hips over the feet, so you can react and hold the edge.
- Early edging. Getting on the edge at the top of the turn instead of at the end, where racers win time.
- Line choice. Where to start the turn and how round to make it, so you carry speed instead of braking.
- Pole plant and rhythm. Timing that links turns quickly and keeps the upper body quiet.
Who is it for
Strong skiers who want more
This workshop is for skiers who already carve on red runs, or who are strong on reds and want to sharpen their technique. You do not need any racing experience.
It is very popular with teenagers who ski fast and want to learn to ski fast properly, and with adults who raced when they were younger and want to feel it again. Parents often join their children for a session they can share.
Book it privately for the most feedback, or as a small group of friends or family with a similar level.
Common mistakes we fix
What slows most skiers down
Speed comes from technique, not from courage. These are the habits your instructor will work on in the first runs.
- Late edging. Skidding at the end of the turn costs speed and control. We move the edge to the top of the turn.
- Sitting back. A back seat position makes the skis run away. We build a forward, athletic stance.
- Straight lines into a hard turn. We teach a rounder line that keeps speed without big braking turns.
- Busy upper body. Swinging arms and shoulders disturb balance. We keep the hands forward and the body quiet.

Ski racing lessons FAQ
Do I need to have raced before?
No. The workshop is an introduction to race technique for recreational skiers. You should be comfortable on red runs and ideally already carving your turns.
Do you set up gates?
The session focuses on the technique behind racing, with drills on the open piste. For training with gates, look at the race training camps of Ski Racing Camps.
Do I need racing skis?
No. Your normal piste skis are fine. A well-tuned ski with sharp edges makes a big difference, so a service before your session is a good idea.
Private or small group?
Both. Book privately for the most feedback per run, or as a group of up to five people with a similar level. It is a great way for friends and families to try something new together.
How long is a session and when does it start?
Every Tech Taster is a 3-hour session. Morning sessions start by 10:30 and afternoon sessions between 13:00 and 13:30. Early starts give you the best snow and the quietest slopes.
Where do we meet?
We confirm the meeting point when you book. Usually we meet at the top of the Bendolla cable car in Grimentz, but we can also meet you in Zinal or elsewhere on the mountain. Your instructor contacts you the day before to confirm the time and place.
Where can I rent equipment?
Grimentz and Zinal both have several rental shops. We recommend Valsport in Grimentz for the quality of their equipment and their service. If you are not sure what to rent for your session, ask us when you book. Helmets are compulsory for children under 16 in our lessons.
